The town hall

HV_f.jpg

It is certain that, from the 15th century, the Place du Perron became the centre of the chief-district of Theux. Many houses were built around the Perron and the Municipal Hall (the current Town Hall) which was at the same time the seat of the Court of Justice of the chief-district of Theux. Amongst these houses there were certainly the workshops of various tradesmen. Indeed some old documents call it the Place du Marché. Its first official name was the "Grand Vinâve", a Walloon term for an important part of a locality. Thus, you will notice that practically all the houses have, at some time or another, been commercial businesses. The square used to be protected by a fortified gate known as the "Porte de la Torette" located at the entrance to the square from the bridge.
